Hi, my name is Mallory. I live in a small town just east of Madison, Wi. My neighbor and I have decided we're jointly going to raise chickens. So this spring we're going to start our adventure. We're attending a seminar this Sunday for newbies. Any suggestions or tips would be gratefully appreciated.

One thing you need to clarify at the seminar is how many chickens are you allowed to have by law. If you're in town, you may be limited. If you're outside of town, probably any number is good. Also, if you decided to sell eggs at a later date, what are the rules you have to follow for doing that?

Some good tips and links from the other greeters, wishing you and your friend the best of luck!

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm looking forward to getting started. I live in a rural area, so there aren't any limits as to how many chickens we can have. We were thinking about starting with 6. I would like to have the chickens free range. How easy will it be to round them up at night? Can they eventually be trained to go into the coop at night or will I have to be chasing them around?

Chickens "home" to their coop and will go back to it at night. You can do this by locking them up in the coop for three nights.

You can also put them into the coop each night but it takes more than a week for them to home that way sometimes.
