Good evening,
I signed up because I have always wanted to get a small flock of chickens, (I always imagined 10). My wife and I just bought 1.6 acres of vacant land near where we live where we plan to build a house eventually and the dream is closer to having a good space to have chickens. I have read a few books and are starting to get a feel for how this is going to go. The biggest thing that I feel like is going to be a struggle is figuring out which breed is best for our environment. The property is in Marmora Ontario, which means it gets cold in the winter. Also the terrain is rocky with lots of scrubby brush and junipers. There will definitely be some attention to be paid to the landscape to make it a little more chicken friendly without hurting the natural plants too much.
We are also looking into keeping bees one day once we have our ducks in a row.
We are very self sufficient and are good at making the best of what we have. The primary goal is to provide for ourselves with eggs and meat and eventually honey in a way that works for us as well as the animals. We would like to do things as “organic” as we can without actual certification due to cost and the upkeep of paperwork. We have no previous experience with farming, which is why I’m here. We are willing to try anything and are not people who need the biggest shiniest fancy machine we are fine with trying to make something ourselves and if that’s not possible just getting to it and getting the job done.
All that ranting done we are excited to take on a new chapter in our lives and are excited to hear how other people get along managing their own flocks!
