Hello, I live in Missouri, and I am retired and looking to start raising chickens. I want to buy six baby chicks in the spring but I have lots to do before I get to that point. I am looking forward to learning more and starting my chicken journey. Thanks so much.
Hi, welcome to BYC! It's nice to meet you.
It's super fun to start a flock. I hope you love it as much as I did!
(I have some different breed suggestions for what you're getting them for!)
Anyway, have fun!

Do the positives out weight the negatives when owning a few chickens? This would be a new journey for me, but I don’t want to get in over my head. Its not an easy decision.
Nothing wrong with starting out with 3 or 4 chickens just to test the waters. A big flock is not necessary as long as you have a few for them to keep each other company, warm on cold nights, hang out together.

For me they certainly do. I have farm chickens and then a few pet chickens that are viewed as kids that replaced the human kids. With them I can discuss the world problems and they never disagree with me.

Oh my, yes. I'm 63 and swear I'm giddy. I've got eight day-old chicks in the house brooder I just can't stop adoring. I have 14 out in the yard. We did this when I was growing up, and now I'm back to it again. They bring such joy, and some say healing. And like @LTAY1946 said, you can talk to them about anything. ☺️

Start small so it's just a small responsibility. You'll see how easy it is to grow your flock if you want.
