Hello, my name is Evette and i am from Martinez, California. I currently have 4 hens and a rooster. I was given 1 hen and a rooster almost 5 years ago and just recently decided to get 3 chicks who are now almost 8 months old and are laying just fine until 2 weeks ago when my black star chicken became broody. I never dealt with broodiness from my 1st hen so i never knew what it was until i called the local vet. I thought she had an egg stuck in there but no, they said it was just her being broody. Can anybody tell me how long this will last I think I’ve read that it could last up to a month.

Welcome to BYC! Glad to have you here! Check out the articles if you haven't yet, lots of helpful information there.

A broody breaks when she wants to, really. She might decide to stop after a week, or a month. You can try to break her yourself, with a broody jail or something similar. Or if you want more chicks, try and let her hatch some.

This article might help you.

Hiya, Evette, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Yes, broody hens stay broody for around 3-4 weeks. In a nutshell, their hormones are telling them they're sitting on eggs, even if it's rocks, or nothing.

We have to break ours from being broody as for one, it's unhealthy especially for silkies who can become easily vitamin deficient. Two, it's so they'll get back to laying eggs because we're silkie breeders.

We break them like many do, by putting them in a wire dog kennel. You want air underneath of them so lay a 1x2 or 2x4 in there for them to stand on so they aren't standing on wires. It takes 4-5 days.
