Hello,

I am a new member and new to chickens.
I will be purchasing 6 chicks in a few weeks to raise for eggs and fun.
I will also be building my own coop and run in the next two months.
I have been looking for best type of chickens to fit my needs. I have two kids so friendly chickens (and productive chickens) are a must. Any suggestions for a breed would be a huge help.
Thank you to all and I look forward to learning from you all and sharing my experiences.

Phil

Easter Eggers are a mixed breed, but most are very friendly and I have found that mine lay quite often. Australorps are also friendly and lay great. I hope all your chicks arrive safe, happy, and healthy!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 on the BYC Breeds section, the Henderson chicken breed chart also compares a lot of popular breeds http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html#j Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Sussex, Plymouth Rocks and Australorps are popular breeds that are decent egg layers and usually good with kids... Red Sex Links are super layers, and while bossy with other chickens are usually good with people. For colored eggs the Easter Eggers or Ameraucana are usually a hit with kids.
