Hello everyone...I am from Texas and I use to raise chickens also....I had just a few Ameracaunas and a couple of Buff Orpingtons and a couple other breeds...That is , until the raccoons got every last one of them....I did have some beautiful Lavander Ameracaunas and I was sick when I lost them...To say the least of what I paid for them..These eggs were very expensive.......I had one LA that was so tame I picked her up all the time...She was beautiful but only laid one Egg...It was a real small blue egg ( I still have it), but she never laid anymore again....Never could find out why...I did keep her in a pen by herself , trying to keep her safe, but that didn't work either!.......Anyway, I plan on getting more chickens AFTER I try to find a way to keep the raccoons out....Thought I had it licked, only to lose the last four I had....I sure miss my chickens....Anyway, hello to all from Texas.....Donna

How did you keep the predators from getting them?....We also have most of what you have for predators...But the worst one we have here for chickens is raccoons...Seems like you get rid of one and three more show up!....I'm sure it's the rest of the family!....So let me in on your secret to keep the predators out please>>>>Thanks...Donna

i use chain link fence with a layer of 1 inch chicken wire over that make sure the chain link goes down and lays flat on the ground at least 8 inches or so that prohibits digging. i also have all of my coops off the ground and my chickens are in runs i do have some old hens that are free range and so far they have managed to survive the predators. i also use human hair i get from the local salon and sprinkle it around the property line it helps keep wild cats and coyotes out of the yard it seems to work pretty good

Hello gander 007, I will not be getting any more chicks for awhile .....I have chain link gates all around the pen...Couldn't see any digging under, but I had an opening on one side....I think once I get that closed up , it will be predator proof....Just need to find the time to get it fixed...Busy most of the time with the cattle...Right now I have to go out and check to see if my heifer has started in labor yet...She was due yesterday.....But I will have some more chicks soon....I have the heat lamps and most equipment I will need for them....I keep my new born chicks , when they are old enough , in a 150 gallon Rubbermaid tub....This one has a crack at the top so I can't use it for water for the cows, so I put my chicks in it to grow .....I put chicken wire over the top and nothing got in there!....It worked great....OK I guess I better go check my heifer and get to bed..... Thank you all for the help...I will look at all those chicken coops tomorrow...Too tired tonight....Good night....Donna
