Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Like you, I keep chickens for eggs. I currently have 25 hens, and no roosters in my flock, and my hens are stress free and enjoying life without any roosters around to harass and over-breed them. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your hens.
That's what we've done so far--just kept hens. Then of course we have to get new ones every few years. What we want to do now is grow our own replacements so we'll need a rooster. And need to figure out what to start with, one breed or a mix.
Glad you have healthy happy hens and hope you're getting lots of eggs. Did you start with chicks or pullets? from hatchery? Is this your first flock?

No, I've been raising chickens for 50 years and have had lots of roosters and incubators over those years where I raised my own chicks from hatch. In recent years however, I have ordered chicks (pullet orders) from hatcheries (including my current batch). I reorder chicks every couple of years and sell off the older hens to keep my flock at laying peak. Of course, sometimes we get attached enough to a particular hen that we keep her until she dies of old age.)
