Hello from St Pete FL!
I am looking to raise our own backyard chickens and forsee using this site a lot! I was wondering if anyone knew of a nice local place in the Pinellas area to buy chickens and if so what type is recommended? I have kids so I want a docile breed but also want nice egg production. In the research I have done so far I am thinking Barred Plymoth Rock would be a good fit, but, the experts are here so if anyone has any advice we are open to it! Thanks!!

I am no expert, new to chickens and BYC, so I can't offer any suggestions or advice, but I can assure you that there are plenty of helpful folks here that will be able to help!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Barred Rocks are generally docile. I have occasionally had an aggressive one, but that is definitely the exception rather than the rule. Based on your criteria, you might want to consider Black Australorps. They tend to be even calmer and more gentle than Barred Rocks and they are better layers. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) have never had any problem making lap pets of our Black Australorps. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. I have Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks and they are all good tempered and sweet, but have no children.

I would suggest you post under Where an I/Where are you. There are a lot of members in FL and they could help with what breeds do best in your area. Once you have your list, you could compare breed tendencies to make the final choice.

Heat is going to be the biggest challenge. Most chicken info doesn't list heat tolerances. In my area we get as hot and humid as FL and people in this area have success with too many breeds to list.
