Hi every one,
Im Rhonda lea and Im new to these parts. My husband and I own a small 5 acre farm (not working) in Wisconsin. I have had farming in my soul since I was little , Im a country girl at heart. When we bought this farm immediately I knew .......chickens and a huge garden !! This will be our first full summer here and I cant wait to get chickens........ So I need all the input and feed back I can get. I love this community and I look forward to becoming a part of the chicken loving family you all have built .......

I am currently looking at getting white leghorns ( 3 ) to see if I can keep them alive out here with the hawks and wild life, then I plan on getting pretty egg laying hens .....strictly for laying eggs not butchering.

I hope you all have a great day !!

Hi :welcome Rhonda Lea

Glad you could join the flock! A 5 acre farm sounds wonderful!! Lots of room for lots of chickens. If you are worried about predators and Hawks you would be best keeping them in a secure enclosed run and free range them when you are able to supervise. The learning centre is a great place to start for lots of really helpful articles on getting started with your new chicken adventure. Here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Be sure to ask any questions, everyone here to help and very friendly. Enjoy BYC :frow

Hi Rhonda Lea, welcome to BYC!

With 5 acres, you'll have lots of room for chickens and a big garden, congratulations on the move!

You've already received a good link from @Yorkshire coop about predators so here's one about gardening you may enjoy:

Nice to have you here!

Hi and welcome to our flock!

So glad you could join the BYC community! Sounds like you're planning for them well. White Leghorns will be a nice starter breed that should lay you lots of large white eggs. I hope you don't have any bad experiences with predators or hawks! It is always hard to lose chickens.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have! Hope you enjoy BYC.

You said the magic word when you said leghorn. Love them, love them, love them!
Not everyone gets why. Everyone that I've had in my small back yard flock, they are
always the most friendly. Piggys too..so, I always call them, Miss Piggy.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Leghorns are a great breed. They are excellent layers. They forage well and enjoy ranging on your 5 acre property.
