The heat's not so bad here.

Not nearly as bad as southern AZ. We get up over 100 quite a few days during the summer, but the chickens are all pretty well acclimated. I just make sure that they've always got clean water, and their coop has plenty of ventilation. My birds free range, so they like shady places, and they dig out lots of nice, cool dust baths in places where I've watered. Neither the chickens nor I can imagine any other way of life... it's all we've ever known.

Now that it's summer, and I'm still off for a few weeks I can go more places! Too hot to travel with chicks though from down South but I'd love to meet up somewhere in the COOLER area of NM.

Hello from Deming.

To help my chickens with the heat and me with keeping the water clean I put an automatic horse waterer in their coop(holds about 1 1/2 cups of water). I use a sponge to clean it when I feed and clean the horses waters. It's shallow enough so if they fall in they can easily get out and it will never spill or run out... as long as the well works and the pipes don't freeze.

New to the chicken game located in Los Lunas! Looking for a breeder in New Mexico, thinking of a heavy broody breed? I have a 2 yr old so I need a docile breed... any ideas? I am looking to start with a flock of 25. Thinking about wyandottes and ordering from Privett Hatchery, but would like to start with great quality birds. Any comments/ideas! Thanks
