DAK- my setup is very much like yours, except more open, less birds, and the run is out to the East (Im thinking yours was to the West?). The birds come from you, and it is typically at least 10 degrees cooler here than at your place... I dont know what gives. Mom & MIL have not lost a single bird- Mom is r miles away, MIL less than 1/4 mile away on the same ranch as me. The only birds I have lost are ones I've got from you or from MIL.

Also- I have never lost an Am or any of my Game chickens to the weather (only to predators), and have only lost 2 birds ever to the cold (& I do not use a heater). Before this year, I have only lost a few birds to the heat, and they were all Cochins.

Ive never seen any coyotes in Idaho, the only time I was there I was in the city :) Beautiful place & nice people. The coyotes we have here are about the size of a Border Collie.

Ok, last post before I head off to work horses- DAK- where/how do you house your showbirds (my guess is on the back porch, in the crates with deep shavings?), and when do you start show prepping them?

Yes, crates with shavings. I also use these as brooders. The Ameraucanas get peepers as juveniles and staying the pens, but I just moved the Black cock to a crate and hope he will molt prior to Nov. I needed the breeding pens as grow out pens at the moment.

I don't know why you are losing birds. My birds get decent airflow up on the him here on the hill. They are also on 20% layer.

The free range Cochins appreciate damp ground to lay on. If I am watering trees, they generally go lay under the one I just finished. The ones in the pens don't get that though. I, also, have a old plastic sled in my front yard that I fill with water and the free rangers will go stand in that. I thought of that for the pens, but it would ruin the Cochins feet.

(now that I'm on a regular computer I can "quote") I feed mine 20% layer pellets, they eat them free choice, and they have as much water as they want. Since I have started spraying the ground in the shade with water a couple of times a day, I haven't lost any birds, and they love the damp, shaded ground. I will just keep wetting the ground a couple of times a day through this summer :)

What do you plan to show this Nov? I have a couple of young birds who *might* be worthy of showing... we'll see as the time gets closer.
