New Mexico

they will for sure, mine were that way with me until they get adult size then they usually are a pretty assertive breed. One of mine didn't like me until it was mature around its 18th month. They have a long fully mature time.
it seem to be working, they are still a little skittish at first but after a few minuets they calm down, they still don't like to be touched, but at least they seem intrested in what i am doing with the RIRs. so it is improving. :)

The SHTF thing is exactly why I got back into goats. I raised and showed dairy goats (Saanens) for many years, but ever since I went off to college I haven't had any goats. Mom has kept some around for the milk, but just one or 2. With the way this world is going, the food monopoly, etc, etc, we figured now is as good a time as any to get back into goats- so we traded a bunch of roosters & ducks for the goats. I am selling the 4 little bucks though. Hubby isn't too into the goats, but it all good, and as soon as they get big enough we'll put them with the sheep that MIL & I share. I also was a bad influence on MIL and gave her a baby doe! hahaha FIL had to shake his head, but he isn't completely against drinking goat milk lol

I was pretty happy with the trade, I eat very little meat so have no use for the butcher roosters except to give them to my sisters, but they have enough for now... so goaties for me! Actually, I'm only going to keep 2 does & 4 bucks, MIL gets one doe, and my parents & sisters will get the other 4 does :) These little bucks are especially nice, I sure hope they go as breeders because they are so nice- they are all from an organic, non-GMO dairy over in Pie Town, NM. BTW- they sell cheese over there, CoonRidge Dairy, and it is EXCELLENT!!! I love to make my own, but since we don't have any milking does right now, I'm happy to buy it from Nancy- GREAT stuff!
Sounds good ill have to check CoonRidge out sometime. I just love the lil kids. yours are really cute. Whats really nice is yours come from a milking stock already, they should be really good milkers. when should i start milking the mom before she stops .

I'm assuming your doe is a Nigerian Dwarf? We never let our kids nurse the dam, always bottle fed, so we milk from day one. However, you can do "share milking" where the babies are separated from their mother during the night, you milk in the morning, then let the babies be with the mother all day. If you're going to milk this way, start any time. If you do not want to share milk or bottle feed, you need to start milking your doe before she begins to wean the babies, because once her milk production goes down, it is very hard to get it to go back up. Much better to keep it up until you're done milking. Basically, babies should be weaned at 2 months, and does should be dried off to prepare for the next freshening one to two months before she is due to kid again- typically you milk a doe for 10-11 months.

Where are you located? I have a few Maran eggs in the incubator from my MILs 2 black hens & white rooster... not what you're looking for, but I'm excited abut getting a good start in Marans.
I'm about halfway between Bernalillo and Santa Fe. I'll probably end up ordering some hatching eggs from someone.
