LOL Yup... I always load up on Cochins and Ameraucanas anytime I'm near Dak... and I got a bunch of cotournix (sp?) quail and a pair of button quail... cuz EVERYONE needs a bunch of quail... hahaha

you guys have been soooo awesome, so now you get another question. haha. Do any of you know where I can get leghorns chicks around by me?

(white or brown doesn't really matter, maybe I need a couple of both

haha.) I really don't feel like paying 37.00 in shipping for a few chicks if I don't have to. (or Jersey giants?? )

If you are just looking for hatchery birds, try a feedstore. If they don't have them, ask if they will be ordering any and that will put a bug in their ear :)

BTW Jersey Giants are a heritage bird and would be best bought from a breeder- there is a HUGE difference between hatchery and breeder birds.

Also- if you are considering Leghorns for eggs, another good option is California Whites- they are half White Leghorn (mother) and half California Grey (sire), and lay VERY well. I myself prefer them over Leghorns because IMO they lay better and eat less, as well as have a smaller comb which is a concern here in the winter.

Privette hatchery has all these in the state if you want hatchery birds nmmrc1983 .the feed stores might be slowing down but I'm sure you can find one that will do it for you. also a few hours drive down south you could be there yourself.

Ive been wanting to raise some quail to, wild almost no contact from me at all and then release them. maybe have some blinds i can hide behind when i do waters and food. I also seen a wild turkey on my land, a lone female. Id like to get a bunch of wild animal stock going on my mountain. for backup food reserves.

Thanks you two. :) Looks like I get to take a little road trip to Portalas . haha. Is it bad that I think I might be addicted to chickens, but with all the great breeds, with beautiful colors, and shapes can you really blame me? LOL. and blaundee I was looking for a white chicken, that is a good layer. :) ( that way I could tell them apart from my red, buff, and blue girls.haha) so California Whites would fit the bill, and I will look in to them. ( after all the help you guys have given me, I trust your opinion. )

If you have an incubator, you could get them super cheap by going to Trader Joe's (if there's one near you) and picking up a dozen of their fertile eggs. (sez a member of the Trader Joe's Hatching Club which has a thread on BYC...check it out)

I forgot about that! lol

nnmrc- What about mypetchicken.com? I haven't looked into it in a couple of years, but they were doing orders of as few as 3 chicks. Don't feel bad about your chicken addiction lol You aren't alone- That's why there is a WHOLE site devoted to chickens!!! hahaha

Steen- I wouldn't know, as I haven't raised quail before, but I've been told that they will go wild once they mature no matter what, as I know from experience many wild animals do even if they are hand-reared (coyotes, bobcats, deer- all that I have known of being hand reared by neighbors have all gone wild even those taken before they had their eyes open), so perhaps you wouldn't have to worry about hiding from them... I say stay posted and we'll see if mine go wild LOL I am going to let a few of mine roam once they are mature, see if they won't hang around and raise babies- what I've heard is if you let them out of their pens, they will never come back. I think if I feed them wheat, etc, they may hang around and get a wild flock ging here at my house. As for the wild turkeys- there were not a lot of them here until the last 10 years or so, when people started feeding them- now they are quite plentiful, and raise their babies in our wheatfields every year, then winter over on our ranch because we feed them wheat every day :) They will come to a whistle once they learn it means food, and walk around on the back porch, stand around the trucks in the driveway, but as soon as it warms up, they are wild again. It's ALWAYS a great idea to have "extra food sources"... deer, elk, turkeys- these are our hillbilly MREs lol

I don't have a brooder right now, I just started on my chicken adventure with 4 that I bought at a local feed store- couldn't help it- then I found 2 more that I had to have- you know how it goes, and I already Love it. haha, I also checked mypetchicken.com they have a lot that I want (soo many I may need to move to a bigger yard. haha

. ) and yes they will ship me as few as 3 chicks, but it will cost me 37.00 in shipping. hummm, maybe it would be worth it. has anyone bought chicks from them?

One of my friends is a school teacher. She went and got trader joes eggs to hatch in her classroom. I wondered how that works at trader joes. And what is it completely random eggs. And where do they come from. Does each trader joes get eggs from local hatchery's or do they get them out of state and ship the eggs to all the stores. How does that work.

Yes that's exactly what i was thinking. except i love calling them hillbilly MREs , that's so funny.

Ive really like for a hatchery privetts stock. I'm not sure how your car does on gas but 37 bucks for my pet chicken might be pretty close to the same cost as driving to portales. Ive wanted to go down there myself to see the breeding pens. Ive got some really nice birds from them and allot of obvious hatchery stock. makes me wonder what the breeding pens actually look like in person down in portales. I'm raising some Crevecoeur and White crested black polish i got from them right now.
