New Mexico

Blaundee I'm in the unm area of ABQ, actually have a few neighbors with ducks, geese, chickens etc... It's become the urban fad these days...
I know you definitely dont want your run turning into a swamp but I think on the super hot days wetting it down ools things off a bit... A mister system might be a bit overkill, I only considered it cause I, away a couple days a week but I think they do fine with the most days I'm there and can wet down there run (usually dries out by days end anyways).

Steen, I've hunted ducks for a few years and I've shot some ducks that stump G&F officers and veteran hunters, I think there's just a lot of cross breeds. No telling what you ended up with... The plumage looks like a mallard or Mexican duck but the greenish bill is not typical of either... Looks like a cool duck though, I'll leave him alone ;)

he was 100% rouen looking a cpl months ago. I don't know if the mallard look alike rouens have a different colored bill but he was 100% male color pattern now he has been molting out the color pattern of the females.

It just now dawned on me- you're in Jemez Springs lol I'm up in Lindrith, so one of your closest neighbors on this forum lol Do you ride horses? I'm always looking for new trail riding buddies and new mountain trails to explore :)
Sorry - Just logged on. June was a hard month. Lost 5 of my reds from smoke during the Thompson Ridge Fire. It was 500 yards from my back door. Have four left - 2 reds (one is a rooster suspect the other is) a barred rock and Mottled Java. Sorry I don't ride - did 20+ years ago.

Hi all - June was a hard month. Lost 5 of my reds from smoke during the Thompson Ridge Fire. It was 500 yards from my back door. Have four left - 2 reds (one is a rooster suspect the other is) a barred rock and Mottled Java. Now that it appears the remaining 4 are staying healthy I want to replace the ones I lost, but don't have the time to start all over with chicks. So I was looking on craigaslist.com and found the link below. Is this a good deal? How would I introduce the younger ones to my 10-11 week olds?

Id say anything you buy withing a few weeks of age from each other you can just put together and they should be fine. at that age they acclimate to each other pretty fast and no one is really mature enough to cause a problem. If you do have some fighting a cpl days with their pen split in half should be fine to get them used to each other.

Hi all! I haven't visited this thread in a long time...been hanging out WAY too long in the quail section of these forums.

Chicksfor2boys, sorry to hear about losing chickens during the Thompson Ridge Fire. I know how bad the smoke can get. Last year the Little Bear Fire roared right over and past our place and we chose NOT to evacuate. Too many pets and poultry. It was really hard on the poultry. The chickens were in a constant state of panic. Some of the quail almost died from the smoke inhalation, but did survive.

Anyway, I am sorry about your birds. About the only thing you can do is if one is suffering from smoke inhalation, bring them inside the house. We kept the air conditioner running constantly due to the acrid air that was positively gagging. But if a bird is in really bad shape, bringing them inside might save their lives.

Is the rain falling yet at everyones places? We are getting spit on, but barely anything yet. Although the dead grass does have a greenish hue. Dying trees everywhere. But if nothing else, we will have loads of wood for the woodstove come winter.

Hope everyone is doing well in this great state of New Mexico!

I'm not concerned with anything around here turning into a swamp LOL I WISH I had to worry about that- I just pray for rain every day, it is SO dry & sad. On the up side, I have never had to worry about things like thrush or rainrot on the horses or hoofrot on the goats & sheep lol It HAS been raining a tiny bit almost every evening for the past week, I am SO THANKFUL for that, and so is my garden :D

We've been getting smoke from the fire on Jemez and from up in CO... everyone's sinuses & eyes are pretty irritated. It rains a little bit in the evenings, just enough to clear up the air- I am wondering if the smoke isn't what's giving us rain! LOL I can't imagine evacuating.... It would be HARD on all involved, but we do have plans in place :) We had a big fire in 2006 that was just 10 miles away, but nothing big close by since then (just little fires, thank God!).
