Sorry, Just LF Ameraucanas and Cochins here. Welcome to the NM thread. How many chickens do you have?

I'm down to "0" chickens now. Did have 13 Partridge Rock hens and 2 roos, but went on vacation and a friend was watering and such for me, gate was left open, and a blue heeler dog got in and killed everything.

Returned home to find that it looked like someone had burst a feather pillow around my property. Now I'm wanting to start up a flock of Welsummers or Marans. Preferrably the Wellies. From what I have been told, they are a bit less " standoff-ish". Easier to tame down. I guess I'll just have to pay the big $$ and purchase day olds from the hatchery.

p.s. About a week later, the dog took a dirt nap when he tried to get my neighbors chickens.

I have three of the cockoo marans roosters, two of which are going to meet the freezer if I cannot find a good home. I will be driving up to Alb on the 21st and be happy to meet you somewhere with one.

Shame that a dog suffers because an owner neglected to contain it.

I've also struggled with neighbors and their dogs. It's heartbreaking and maddening. I'm sorry you've had to deal with it. My wellies are from Ideal, and the birds are pretty nice. They lay a nice, dark egg. Not like a marans, but way darker than anything my other girls lay. Ideal is good because there's a $25 order minimum instead of a 25 chick minimum.

Good luck!

Jossanne, I didn't know that about Ideal's minimum of $25. Thanks so much for the info. Problem solved.

LOL You're cracking me up! I get a thrill when I look at the thermometer and see that it is 10 degrees at 6 am!!! (But this morning was -2 at 6 am... so I'm not too thrilled.) See the way living in the cold has warped my poor brain?!?!?!

Blaundee,

Ha-Ha !!!
We're having a "Heat-Wave" here in Gallup, NM this morning! 13 F at 10 AM.

You'd Love it !!! So Balmy...So Springlike...I'm keeping an eye out for mosquitoes, though !!!

Oops, time to throw another log on the fire....

Later, I need to make "snowshoes" for my chickens. I'm getting bored watching them FLY from the coop to the feed-dishes and then fly back to the coop. Maybe I'll make a couple pairs of skis for the more adventurous roosters............

Ha-Ha !!!
