The babies are doing very well! Thank you so much for them! They are so healthy and active, and feathering out pretty quick. The little lavender one loves to fly, and every time I reach into their bin she flies up onto my arm or shoulder!LOL I needed to ask you again- it seems that I remember you saying the babies are from a Ribbeck rooster over Shaeffer hens? Or did I just hear you wrong? I got all excited when I saw the babies that I forgot to write it down! LOL:D

The cockerel is a Ribbeck black split to lav from her LS x LS pen. You can go to her website for the lineage in that pen, but if I remember correctly, she bred a Shaffer lav cock to her black hens, and a Blehm lav cock to her hens, and then bred the splits together. She sent me two of those LS eggs. Your black cockerel and the sire of these chicks are them. The pullet is also Ribbeck, but her lav pen came from Mr. Shaffer. Hope that makes sense.

The smaller lav cockerel is from Shaffer. The larger from Ribbeck.

Don't jinx yourself calling that little lav a she already!!!! The more people oriented chicks tend to be boys, but there are exceptions.

Hahaha! I know it, I just definitely didn't want to call any of them a "he"! LOL I am crossing my fingers they are ALL girls!

I think I need to print that info out and graph it, then put it in my chicken book. I'm sure glad you know all of this!

Let me know if/when you decide to get rid of some Cochins, I need more.

I have 11 GLCs hatched as of last night from my good trio, and 3 more in the bator. I will probably have a few come fall.

I may be getting some eggs from a show quality breeder. Let's see how that goes.

Writer of Words,

Sorry to hear that you lost one.

I'm surprised it's so cold down there in Chapparral in the southern part of the State. We've warmed up to 4 F (with wind-chill its -16 F ). Gonna be really cold tonight.

My chickens are almost all just hundled together in the coop. They step out to eat some and then go back inside.

I'll put on their heat lamp this evening, I expect.

Yes it's frigid here!!!!!!!! I'm hoping they cancel school for the rest of the week except my portable is warmer than my house and many student's homes. I wish I had a fireplace!

We've been without water since Wednesday, but fortunately we live in a place without natural gas service so we use propane and heat our house with wood. We've been warm, even though we smell bad! Our pipes started to thaw today, but we've got a busted pipe so we've got to fix it before we can have water again. Our little hardware store is out of PVC though, with all the busted pipes in the valley, so we're searching through friends' stashes of old pipe to see if we can find what we need... wish us luck!

It was down to -9 one night, which is really unusual. Two of our roos got frostbite on their combs, but everyone else seems fine. We're also thankful that it's not worse and that we've got heat and shelter!
