New Mexico

Hiya Lute,
I'm in Socorro, sorry I didn't see your post sooner. We are currently in town and fixing up our new place in San Acacia. Where did you get your pullets?

Kelly

Hi Kelly! Welcome to the forum!

I picked up my sexlink pullets from a lady in Edgewood at a Poultry Swap. $6 each. There's another one at the end of the month (always the last Saturday of the month). I also picked up my little rhode island reds as chicks at the Tractor Supply in Bosque Farms for $2.65.
Since I have an incubator I'll be hatching the rest of my flock myself.

I'll have to keep the Poultry Swap in mind, I'm looking for a Delaware Roo, or if I can't find one of those locally a RIR or NH roo and raise Red Stars from my Delaware hens. How old were your pullets when you bought them?

My pullets were 4 or 5 weeks old when I got them. They're HUGE now and should be laying eggs about this time next month.

Actually I have a friend in ABQ that has NH Reds for sale right now. They're 7 weeks old and he wants $7 for them. I'll see if he has a NH Roo for you. I'm seeing him next week to incubate some eggs for him anyways. I can pick up a roo if you want.

EDGEWOOD POULTRY SWAP

This Saturday (April 28th) 9am to 12-noon.
From Albuquerque, head East on I-20 for 27 miles.
Take Exit 187 (Edgewood). Keep Left under the bridge. Turn right at the next light (Church St). Continue straight for a half mile. The Feed Store will be on the right, off the road about 300 feet.

Please try not to come any earlier than 8:40 to set up. No goats, sheep, etc due to livestock rules in NM. Only rabbits, poultry, and farm dogs will be allowed to sell. Please leave your personal dogs at home and if anyone needs help Natalie Chaney (She hosts) will be in the tan SUV phone 948-2145 ... no truck this week. If anyone has extra boxes laying around we can always use them for the people buying who always seem to forget or buy more than their cages can hold :) I will have a couple extra cages for birds that need to be seperated or emergencies.

Hello, everyone!

I'm in Edgewood here. My husband was just stationed at Kirtland AFB. We came from Georgia so things are a bit different :) I left my chickens at a good home in Georgia but sadly I haven't been able to find any silkies. Does anyone know where I could find some? :) My chickens have a 400sq ft run and 2 coups. I have 8 right now (3 EEs, golden comet, rhode island red, buff orphington, barred rock, and one who-knows-what). I'm only looking for a handful :) All the babies are still in the garage and won't be able to go out for another 3-4 weeks.

Thanks, anyone, for the help. I'm not very backyard chicken literate, so if you could message me, it would be much easier than me finding the reply :)

I hope there are more chicken people in the area! Look forward to talking with ya.
Ally, if you are ever headed south to Roswell, I might have a partridge silkie cockerel for you if you were interested............. did you get ahold of George in Abq?

Was thinking of doing some meaties this year and was wondering when and how people do it here in the dry SW. I see a lot of pictures of people with tractors on lush green grass fields and that is not what I have so what do people do? Also, should I wait until the late summer/early fall to get them because I have heard that they don't like the heat?
Haven't personally had meaties, but iir, they only live something like 8 weeks before being harvested?? We've got just a regular ole' coop and run. I think tractors are ok if you have a few, but we've got more than that. I don't know why they would need special housing accommodation?
