I'm needing to ask a few new mom questions. So you can see my new chicks that arrived yesterday (does anyone else that gets new chicks feel like time slows way down) from my updated avatar. So, a couple of things:
1) I have two buff orpingtons and 1 golden laced wyandotte that are about 3-4 days old. I've noticed some behaviors that concern me. Is it normal for them to peck at each other? It seems that the wyandotte is getting bullied by the other two. Then the 2 buffs pecked at each other over a piece of wood shaving.
2) I've witnessed the wyandotte pecking at poop and then looks like she's trying to "rub it off in the wood shavings". Is this normal? I'm sure I'm being over concerned, but want to do and be the best mom I can be.

Survival of the fittest, pecking order, all of the above. Smallest ones going to get picked on. Saw my mom raised five day old chicks chase each other fighting over a bug. They were mean to each other. One would get it and get chased by the others. Went on for a good while. They seem to pick at and up anything they can. Even poop. Gross, but they have to learn right? I had a two day old bantam chick digging a hole in the ground looking for bugs. Go figure.

if you feel better, split them up. I wouldn't. Let them work it out. You will know who is boss hen. Give that one a good name.

Ok, thanks! I feel a little better now but can't wait to start socializing them. Going to start slow tomorrow. I can see how people get so into this. I look forward to raising some sweet, loving socialized good egg laying hens

If your baby chicks were with a momma hen, they would eat her poop to pick up immunities from her. Yuck, but normal. And my chicks always do alot of eye pecking and toe pulling as well. They'll peck your eyes and pull your hair too, so be careful while you're socializing them ;)
