Hello everyone! My name is Elisabeth and my family and I have been living in NE for a year now. We have 2 boys and a mini schnauzer and it has always been a dream of ours to have chickens. While we live in the city, we have 1/3 acre, which is enough room for our little garden and some birds.

We are in the beginning stages of building our coop and hopefully will get some chickens by the end of the summer.

My question to you all- what is your favorite breed of chicken and why?
 
Welcome to BYC, Elisabeth! My favorite chickens so far have been my golden comet my and easter eggers, neither of which are true breeds. The golden comet (AKA red sex link) has been my unbeatable egg-laying machine for 2.5 years now, laying big medium-brown eggs nearly daily. I love the easter eggers for the fun colored eggs of course, but also their adorable muffed faces.

What breeds will work best for you will depend on your needs and your location! I likely won't get another buff orpington because mine struggled in the Florida heat, but that wouldn't be an issue if I were located somewhere cooler.
