So I picked up a few sacks of this non-GMO feed from a new supplier...I was not expecting mash. I am used to pellets, I get manna pro that seems to be all natural but not non-gmo. That feed is 20% protein, It was working great. I just got the new feed a few days ago, it is a mash, which I've never used before, it is mainly dust, with chunks of corn and what not. The new mash also has 3 additional ingredients in it:
dried aspergillus niger fermentation
dried bacillus subtilus fermentation extract
dried trichoderma logibrachiatum

The new mash is also 16% protein, which has me concerned since my girls were performing so well on 20% pellets of manna pro. The new supplier said that they would gobble it up like they were starving, which they have not really, but I think they are perplexed by the dusty food not in pelet form.
On top of all this, the dang feed wont fall down in my feeder properly, i think I've heard people call it "bridging". I have a standard round metal hanging feeder from TSC and the feed does not seem to fall down in and fill the little trough. I was thinking about maybe drilling more holes in the feeder to make the gap bigger... if i jiggle the feeder, more will fall down.

I think this feed will have to really perform or I may switch back to the genetically modified pellets with no pro-biotics. I wonder if my birds get that stuff being free range and eating rotton this and that all the time?
what do you guys think, les protein wont feed properly in feeder, all dusty... maybe I'll get used to it?

I did the same thing recently. I've never feed mash before but I've found the last 2 types of organic feed I've tried have been dusty. I don't get it? I've been mixing it with a local feed mills own mix to get it to go through the feeder better but also so there is less waste. So I guess what's the point of spending the extra money on organic. I wish I could find an organic feed I really liked and was readily available.

The feed I'm trying now it Nature's Grown out of WI, the last 2 were local guys from MI oh I did also get 2 bags from Countryside (I think) these I loved. Consistency was great, the chickens loved it buy by the time you factored in shipping it was $34 a bag. Just can't do that.

Can we switch feeds please? My chickies wont eat their organic non-GMO pellets!

On the topic of probios, I give mine Zoo Formula by Dynamite...amazing product that is all their vits/minerals and probios!

I googled the things i listed in the ingredients above(fermentation extracts and such)... didn't find much, does someone have a source of info on the specific ones i listed in the first post?
I was worried because the eggs I got the past couple days were tiny, but they are back up to size today... and i may be crazy but i swear my birds combs look a little healthier, maybe the weather. Does someone know if drilling more holes in the feeder to increase the gap size will work?

I don't see why extra holes wouldn't work. I've been putting feed in a large livestock ground feeder then placing it under my nesting boxes so they can't get in and throw it around. It's worked really well. In the other coop I just end up shaking it down everyday and that seems to have worked fine too. As far as your chickens being more healthy, I would agree. I'm sure they are just like people in that regard. Better quality food = better health. I just wish that there were more choices. Hopefully as the non GMO movement gains momentum, there will be . Good Luck. Wish I could direct you to someone/someplace to answer your feed questions.

I appreciate the feeder comments.... we just have to all remember to support what we believe in.... you can't want healthy food for your community and yourself if you sell pies made with ingredients from save-a-lot at the local market. There is a fella by me right now who has a SARE grant to experiment with local grain production models... hopefully he is wildly sucessful. I guess I got off topic there a little bit...
I will drill more holes in the feeder this afternoon, and post back so others may reference...
I already give my birds rotten food

maybe that trichoderma on the oranges is the same as the extract they are getting in the new mash... who knows.
