New Pics of my Percheron

What a lovely girl! She sounds like a really wonderful horse.

I remember seeing a sig that said, "Ride a draft horse, it will make your butt look small."

Helm, I couldn't help but laugh because after I saw Sam's pics then I saw Marcie! I got this image of Sam courting Marcie!

Also, I think those little hats y'all wear are hilarious! I've always worn cowboy hats and ballcaps. Maybe our heads are harder than y'all's!

Woodland - I have a t shirt that says, "Size DOES Matter" that I always wear when I ride her!

Bronc - Nah - we just use more of what's IN our heads! No, really - they make western style helmets, too. Get over fashion and/or ego and protect your grey matter!! Can't replace it. (I've tried this argument on SO many people, incl. DH - who I almost have convinced - I just can't get over people who don't think it will happen to them)

And as far as courting...Sam would LOVE to get his hooves on Miss Marcie but she is scared to DEATH of him! I don't think she knows exactly what that little brown creature IS. Like a mouse and an elephant...

Oh, I need you to preach to me! I'm almost there; I think it comes with age (just turned 40

). I used to be totally fearless, never wore a helmet as a kid unless someone nagged me, and tossed it the minute I was old enough. Now I'm not only pondering wearing a helmet again, but I've even been looking at vests! It just seems like such a grand idea - not that I fall off too often, but when I do it sure hurts a lot more than it used to!

OKay, Bea...

Did you know most serious head injuries occur from falling off at the WALK. (yeah, not us hunters over fences, not the jumpers, not the crazies galloping all over the place)

The group most affected by head trauma injuries are pleasure/trail riders. (again - most pleasure/trail riders don't wear head protection whereas it is required in many other events)

I have always worn one. Now that I have kids, especially, the risks seem more. Who would you leave behind? Who would bear the burden of your care if you were incapacitated? Yeah, you can still get hurt or even die with a helmet on, but the risk of catastrophic head injury is SO much less!

They even come in snazzy designs, leather with stitching...colors....I mean, being a traditionalist I still have a velveteen mushroom cap...but you could really get fashionable WITH a helmet!! I LOVE the black one with pink stitching!

Now here's an argument I can't even wrap it around...

A HUGE percentage of head injuries occur while DISMOUNTED. I know I've taken a few good knocks, but they (the experts) suggest you wear a helmet all the time around horses. Nope - can't do that one!!

Go buy a dern helmet! $100 for your life...not too shabby.

WOW! I don't know how I survived 7 years of riding saddlebronc in the rodeo and a lifetime of ranchwork! Especially since I'm so stupid, as you say! I've been bucked off every which way and kicked several times, yet here I am walking and talking just like nothing ever happened. I must be one of those lucky stupid people, huh? You have some gorgeous animals, Helm. Thanks for sharing!

WHOA! I never called anyone stupid! I'm very happy for you that you've never sustained any horrific injury - but look around, a lot of people HAVE. So, try to keep you gufawing to a quiet chuckle when you see riders in helmets and/or vests...we're just not so into having our skulls smashed in.

Anyway, I HARDLY see the point of any protective gear for rodeo bronc and bull riders! If you're out there doing THAT you obviously don't fear death - you laugh at it...so I'll pay my ticket and watch you and you BETTER not have on gear

It's like female boxers wearing those silly head protectors! Get off it and BOX!
