New plan! (LOTS O PICS, adding them as I go)

The weather is so not cooperating with me! So, I decided to build a lid for my brooder while I wait, lol. I got a spendier piece of 1"x2"x8' maple to make the lid out of. That way I am less likely to get splinters on a daily basis, lol. I paid $4.82 for it though! And another $2.74 for some Paneling nails to hold it all together with, since I figured that the 3" drywall screws were over kill here.

I have my first basketweaving class tommorow afternoon, so I doubt I will get to it tommorow. But, Thursday is almost all wide open, except for a 9am doctor's appointment that I forgot I had, lol. So, hopefully I can get the lid made on Thursday! I need to get it put together so I can start temperature testing before I have fuzzy butts in the box! I have 14 days left till pick up (as of tommorow morning)!

The interview today was short...and I should hear back by Friday if I get the job. The last one I successfully got an interview at was a doggy day care...they had 500 applicants to choose from! So, it is a very long shot, but I do have cashiering experience...so that helps I think.

Okay, I'm off to measure and mark the 1x2 so it is ready to cut when I am!

Got the 1x2 all measured last night...and I only have enough wood to do 3 sides of the lid, lol. Back to HD today...I think I may look at a "discount" piece of 2x2 for the back edge of the lid to keep costs down.

Yup, already planned on pre-drilling.

I'm lazy that way, lol. They were just the only nails that appeared short enough for the plan I have in my head and looking at the board that was in my hand.

So I lied...the 1x2's are Pine, not Maple, lol. Slightly softer, but I'll still drill the holes.

I did get a 6' piece bought today to go with the 8' one for the brooder. It was slightly more expensive (per foot) than the 8' one, but my truck is full of snow/ice/water right now and I had to figure out how to get it home without it getting too wet! I ended up wrapping both ends with plastic shopping bags and then tying the bags to the hook/eye type things at the front and back of the bed, kind of suspended it, so it wasn't getting wet.

Then, I had my basketweaving class today! That is something I could do a lot more of! I even have a completed basket already! We made Melon Baskets today...using 8" hoops, so it isn;t a giant basket, but should work great for egg gathering from 3-6 hens (planning next year's "crop" in there too

). Until then, it's just gonna look pretty, lol. I'm going to have to do some looking around for an internet site that sells the materials for this...the instructor said there is no where to get these locally! I definitely want to make some of these for Christmas presents this year...

The color should lighten up a bit after it dries for a few days...had to soak all the bits in water to keep the reeds from breaking! It also isn't "perfect" as it leans a bit to one side, lol. But, I like it... I have a bag of decorative rocks (purchased for the chick's waterer) sitting in it to weigh it down and try to get it to sit a bit flatter, I made it perfectly round!

WOW.... that is a really nice basket!! I love it. Did they teach you the pattern or did you just come up with it as you went along? I'm surrounded by bamboo down here..... wonder if that would work for the weaving part? Any way... congrats!! Good job!!

I'm slowly coming back from this flu. I felt better a couple of days and went out to do stuff, then ended up back in bed sick. So now, I'm staying in not doing anything till its really gone. So, no HD today.

Hoping your snow and weather gets better so you can continue building.

Lol, the pattern was part of the class...it's a "god's eye" weave. I haven't ever seen them done before except with popsicle sticks and yarn! The rest is basically an "over/under/over/under" pattern until there just wasn't any room left for another row.

I'm so glad you're starting to feel better! My sister is home sick with a fever over 101 and has been since yesterday! The flu sucks! As for the weather...it's pretty schizophrenic at the moment, lol. It's supposed to warm up into the mid-40's for the next few days and then rain & snow for a day or two, then sunny again, then more snow... "Somebody" can't make up their mind!

I'm going to ask her at the next class if I can do this basket out of willow...there is a place (in OR I think) that sells gorgeous colored willows! If not, I guess I can learn how to dye reed, lol.
