New Point of Lay Hen - Pale/Wattle turned pale .....

I could be wrong, but my understanding is the bird needs to be drinking the mixed water solution for the full 7 days, even if you did "drench" (direct dose) her for 2-3 days, she still needs to drink the mixed water.

I can't say whether there's something bad in the Amprolium for you. I'm not a vet nor medical doctor.
I do know in the US there is no withdrawal period for Amprolium. I personally have used it for my birds and have never considered throwing out eggs, etc. while using it. IF I felt the need to treat one with Amprolium, I just treated all so I didn't have to separate birds.

Consulting your vet would be the best thing since they did the test and found the levels high - did they not recommend as course of treatment? If they didn't, then I would ask.

There is an online site called The Chicken Vet who offer a faeces sample test - I used that service - so I didn't go to my vet (bit difficult at the moment with lockdown). Plus I don't think my vets are that knowledgeable on hens in this area.0-

If I thought there would be no egg withdrawal - then I would just treat all. But the 'egg withdrawal' with Coxid is vague - there are differing opinions online and as it is 'officially' for pigeons - the bottle itself does not say.

I already have another hen who is separated (she has egg peritonitis) and I could put her with this hen for the week. I have to catch her first!

I guess my other thought re: drenching was to make sure she is actually drinking/taking the medication. @casportpony - can you advise please?

Thanks

My young chicken has been separated for three days now! I fill a drinker with 0.5 litre of water and the Coxoid (approx. 3.1ml) - I do this fresh every day. Since the last update - her condition hasn't improved (nor has it gotten worse). My concern is that at the end of the day - the water doesn't look like it's gone down much/if at all. Could she be getting moisture from wet grass? I've syringed a little bit of the medicated water in her each day (obviously that is only a small amount (about 15ml 3% of 0.5 litre).

I don't want to risk her getting worse. However, I can't find any information on how much to use if I were to drench her with it and then leave a half measure in her water each day. That way I would know that she is getting a decent amount in her system (but how much do I dilute and syringe etc). Can anyone help with the amount to syringe???

@casportpony or @Wyorp Rock

Thank you as always for any advice.

I think @casportpony and I had that conversation a good while back about direct oral drench of Coxoid. If she can check me and my notes, I would appreciate it.
I have it down as 0.25ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 3 days. This is for Harker's Coxoid based on 20mg/kg.

So....I would use that. Amprolium (what's in Coxoid) is mild, so I would drench her, but then also offer the mixed water solution to drink as well. If she's not drinking during the day, then syringe her with the mixed water as much as you can throughout the day as well.

Does that make any sense?

She may have more going on than just Coccidiosis. Sometimes there's an illness or condition that weakens the bird allowing an overload.

Thank you @Wyorp Rock - I will go and weigh her (i'm guessing she is around 1.5-2kg).

Please excuse my ignorance - I want to be sure I get it right, so based on what you were saying if she weighs (for example) 4 pounds - then she would have 1ml of Harker's Coxoid diluted in how much water?

Thanks

You are wanting to direct oral drench her correct? (I may be misunderstanding!)

If she weighs say 4 pounds, then you would give her a direct, undiluted dose of the Coxoid of 1.0 ml She also would drink the normal mixed water throughout the day.

Yes that's right - I wasn't sure if it could be given undiluted and I didn't want to risk harming her through my own ignorance (I may have been using the word Drench incorrectly) - I just meant that I wanted to give her a dose directly (diluted or undiluted) so that I knew she definitely had it in her system. (Could I then give her a syringe of 5ml with 1ml Coxoid and 4 ml water - would that have the same affect as giving her 1ml undiluted. Then leave her the normal mixed water throughout the day? After weighing her of course). If that makes sense!

Thank you (again).

I suppose you could, the main objective would be to give her a direct dose. Then she would need to be drinking the mixed Coxoid water for the rest of the day.

Just an update. I've 'drenched' her this morning with the Coxoid (about 0.7ml). She only weighs 1.2kg bless her! She has the medicated water outside as well. I am worried about her because she seems to be going backwards if anything - looks a little paler and her poop is green, liquid, runny again. I don't know if perhaps I am stressing her by syringing her each day and separating her from the others (although she can see them through the fence during the day and at night) and by catching her each evening to put her to bed. Let's hope by giving her Coxoid direct as well as in the drinking water - she makes an improvement over the next couple of days.

Thanks again for your help.

@Wyorp Rock - please can I ask a quick question - do you know if I am able to use Apple Cider Vinegar as well as Coxoid when treating Ginger for coccidiosis?

She is not showing any signs of improvement (unfortunately). :-(
