New Possum....on my Patio...

I think we're the only ones think they're kinda cute. tee hee. They'll just try to get away if they can, but do not approach a cornered one, they will bite.

Many years ago my daughter did "Wildlife On Wheels" for the local zoo. Taking animals to schools and nursing homes. One of her favorites to take was a possum named Sadie. She was very sweet and just wanted you to hold her and she'd hide her face under your hair and sleep. I must find that pictures. Hmmmmm.

My cat dropped a baby possum on my porch once. It was not old enough to be away from its mom, and it wasnt dead, it was "playing possum". I bottle fed it and eventually released it back into its "natural" habitat--the outskirts of Sacramento, Ca. Of course, I didnt own any chickens back then.

He still eats on the porch every night and runs as fast a possum can run! when the dachshund chases him...but he is CUTE!!!!

I lived in TN, born and raised there, possum's are abundant there. We came of from school one day to see my mother kneeling by a box in her bedroom. In that box were 7 baby possum. The mother had gotten hit by a car on our road, and my mom passed it and saw its stomach moving. She got out of her car, and being the great nurse that she is, reached into the pouch of this dead possum, and took the babies that had survived. We took them to an animal refuge near by. The women is crazy...lol, but on a darker side if that possum gets ahold of a person or animal it will tear them apart. My cat rastus got it good from a possum, and it cost us 700.00 to get him fixed up. You have to remember yes it is cute, but it is still a wild animal.

Good advice and great story!! I hope I can hold myself back from trying to sneak a pet or two in if he "plays possum" on my porch !!!....my kids have already told me how embarrassed they would be to have to take me to the hospital for a possum bite!!

And not only crazy, dangerous too. The "night" creatures in this area are a notorious source of many of the documented cases of rabies.
I'd feed the cats inside for a week or two until he moves on or at lease take the food up.
And, they will eat chickens. I lost several young pullets to a male once. I caught him in the hen house dining on his last one.
Why "ask" for trouble. I'd not lure him to my place with a kitty food buffet..jmho

I just figure he probably is a short-timer anyway, and so far, he is content to stay out of my backyard where my chickens are, and, after all, at some point, he will try to cross the road...
