How are they marked with the chick meaning a new post? Is this an automatic thing, do the moderators do it, or do we do it when we start a new post?

It's automated by the web site for you. If it's new since the last time you were on, it shows up. If you have posted on a thread, there will be a dot next to it.

That little chick appears whenever there is a new post or an added comment on any post. I believe its all automatic.

Well, that's weird, that's what I thought, but half the time my new posts don't display the chick; only sometimes they do.
