We’ve added 4 new hybrid layer pullets to our flock, currently in their ‘look don’t touch’ period.

Today I notice one is open mouth breathing most of the time, still eating and drinking and currently preening while I type this.
I’ve attached video of the breathing below.

Could it be heat? I’m in Brisbane, Australia and current temp is 26 Celsius / 78 Fahrenheit which I wouldn’t think is too hot… also none of the others are doing this and if one was too hot wouldn’t they all be?

What else should I be looking for / considering / doing??

Sorry doesn’t look like I can attaché a video. Hopefully photos show it well enough. Definitely breathing a bit faster than the others when her mouth is open. Other times breathes completely normally…

Her comb looks a bit off and darkened. Check inside her mouth for any obstructions. Could it be too hot where you’re located? Any sneezing or coughing? Noisy or gurgly breathing? How old is she? Is she laying eggs? If so, when did she last lay an egg?

Possible causes for open-mouth breathing and a darkened comb can be—
  • Egg bound or Egg Yolk Peritonitis (EYP).
  • Fowl Cholera
  • Tracheal or esophageal obstruction.
  • Wet Fowl Pox Virus
  • Avian Influenza Virus (I’m only mentioning this because it is going around).
  • Respiratory infection such as Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (MG), Infectious Coryza or Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV).
  • Canker
I hope this helps!

We’ve only had these 4 for a few days so no eggs from any yet, I put that down to the change of environment.

No other respiratory symptoms, clear eyes and nose, no sneezing or coughing (not sure what that looks like in a chicken but not notices anything out of the ordinary)

I thought it might be heat but it’s only 26’Celsius, warm but didn’t think that would be too hot
