Hi all!
We've got a small flock that we are gradually working on expanding.
We got a few pullets a few days ago from a local market. Being as new and as naive as we are we didn't really think of having a closer look at the new hens prior to buying them, so only after letting them out we noticed (the next day) that 2 of them appear unwell.
They seem to struggle to keep their eyes open. Every now and then they'll perk up and go for drink and food, just to shut their eyes again and stand still. Even after being picked up they flap for a little and then go back to "sleep" again.
They don't have any obvious signs of illness, feathers are clean and free of mites, no discharge from eyes or beaks, vent is clean, they do eat when awake, however I think they are skinnier than our other hens. However, our pullets are home grown from the egg, with a mum and lots of space to forage, so I'm guessing they'd have an advantage.
Any ideas? I'm curious whether it could be ab eye infection/sensitivity that forces them to close their eyes and makes them sleepy as a result?
Or could it be a parasitic infestation?
They're kept separate for now (although they were with the rest of the flock until yesterday, so I guess whatever dage they could do is already done...).
Thanks in advance!!!
