New Purina Feed

+1. A snake oil gimmick. Suddenly the world needs 'omega 3' or we're all going to waste away and die of malnutrition and get dumber as it happens! Chickens shouldn't have survived since they weren't getting their daily dose of omega 3 (yet they have)!

35 years ago it was 'eggs are going to kill you!', all of a sudden it's 'eat your eggs!'.

Unfortunately too many people fall for these kinds of things and keep it going (believe it or not, there's a huge number of people who fall for those moronic e-mails from some dolt in africa asking to share millions of dollars! Hmmm...makes you wonder which is the actual dolt...the victim or the jerk who's trying to steal your money. Want to learn more about that? Go here http://www.419eater.com/index.php )

There are other reasons besides the Omega 3 angle to use this feed, I cited 2. The pellets are smaller & my guineas liked that and the chickens did also. I think some pellets are way too large. Second, and I'm assuming here that since the feed is 16% & has higher protein flax seed in it, hopefully they use less soy, which is fine with me. You don't want to buy it, then don't!! I am not a fan of Purina regular feeds, but I liked this one. I also pay extra for Mazuri Game Bird Breeder, because I like fish meal & less soy in my feed and I like that the feed is little tiny balls, not pellets & not crumbles. Just what I do, you can do what you want.

By rights there should only be 10% Flax Seed Meal in there mix any more than that could cause health problems.

Manitoba Agriculture and Food, Animal Industry Branch :

Overfeeding flaxseed can cause problems for your hens because flaxseed contains sticky compounds that stop the hen from digesting some of the nutrients in her diet. Flaxseed also contains a compound called linoline that may increase the birds' vitamin requirements. Feeding too much flaxseed can cause production drops, small egg size, reduced body weight gain and thin egg shells. Including 10% flaxseed will increase the omega-3 fatty acids in your eggs and not cause problems for your birds.

The "extruder" that PMI Nutrition use's to make there Game Bird Breeder is the same type used to make floating catfish food and other small type "round pellets".

You must be one of them "free thinkers"? You figured it out. I agree all of it is hype. Eat a well balanced diet. Niot everything needs to be super cool for you. It all evens out.

I bought some of the new Purina feed. My chickens have been eating it for 5 days even my Silkies with no problems. I haven't tasted it(heehee!

I too finally used my $3.00 off coupons. I bought the new 40lb bag of Purina Omega-3. I can't say its horrible....just expensive. My girls normally wont eat pellets no matter what brand, but these are smaller sized. Dont know yet on the taste/color of the eggs. They are going through molting so not many eggs, but I'm going to see if it makes a difference...other than the one in the wallet!

We're finishing our 3rd bag, just picked up a 4th, I had $3 off coupons for each bag. Once the coupons run
out I'll be going with plan Layean.

My flock likes it, but they seem to eat anything. I think if you buy the plan Layena, and ground up some flax seed to mix in, it
would be comparable.
