New rescue, need advise.

Hi, there Welcome to BYC!

:hugs Sorry to hear about your duckling! I do think starting her on some B vitamins would be great for overall leg health, but I don't think her leg problem is really niacin related. I would lean more towards possible genetics or an incubation malposition which caused the leg to grow in such away. I'm guessing you hatched her, was this noticeable as soon after she hatched or did it develop a few days later on? I'm unsure of the prognosis for her, given the severe deformity to her leg, I think a splint would prove too painful to the duckling. There are a few surgeries available for ducklings like this, it'll be costly, and there is no guarantee it will work. Please don't think of me as a "Euthazine right away person" but if you are unable to take her to a vet, I'd probably have her put down.

If you provided me with your general location I can find some vets that'll work with her.
No I did not hatch him, just got him Sunday. but was told he did hatch that way. He was in a brooder with about 20 others, just getting walked on, I said I would take him. I live on the eastern shore of Maryland near Salisbury. If there is nothing I can do, I would be glad just to keep him happy and comfortable. I have already called the Trip State Bird Rescue in Newark DE, but they only do wild birds. My duck is an Ancona and on the endangered watch list if you need that info. Can I just give OTC vitamins? Is there no chance of a decent life? He is learning to balance and use me as support when he can. There is such life and drive I don't want to give up on him. I will let you know what another vet says today. Thank you.

Gotcha. Yeah, I think your best bet would be to have him examined by an avian vet, from what I gather from the picture the affected leg has rotated about 180 degrees, that's going to take some severe measures to fix, and with birds generally, the sooner you get them in the better, if this is left alone for another week I wouldn't doubt that her hocks start to swell, it becomes harder for her to walk, bones become more set in place. I'll look for a vet for you today, I'd get their opinion first. I am no expert.

What are OTC vitamins?

OTC, over the counter, sorry. Can I just pick them up anywhere or are there specific vitamin B complex for ducks?

Sorry for the delayed update. I took Toph back to the vet Wednesday. Apparently when we were they Monday she didn't realize this was going to be a chershed pet worth fighting for. I live in a very rural area, and probably just thought it was just part of an agriculture flock. Anyway, there is a soft splint that needs to be on until Wednesday hoping to hold the hock tendon in place, and a small cotton ball under her foot to help it turn. But she is doing well hopping around on one foot. She will be spoiled even if I have diaper her at night and bring her in.
