My first thought is that waste amino acids in the droppings will overwhelmingly be the ones their diet already provides in excess - which is why they end up wasted in the first place. Not all protein is the same, and some amino acids aren't interchangeable. Those are the ones whose inclusion in the diet are most critical. I'd like to see the rest of the study results, not just the top line summary.

I think our instinctive disgust is a sense that should be attended to. It has evolved to protect us from harm. Quail don't naturally source their protein from other birds' waste. It would be natural if they fed chicken waste to dung beetles, and then fed the dung beetles to the quail. Skipping the intermediary is a very bad idea imo.

There are a number of studies on using BSFL as an intermediary. I've not read deeply to see how robust they might be, but I'm aware of several titles.

Limonene (found in various citrus fruit peels - the name is a hint) is also effective at safely reducing styrofoam to other, more useful, less environmentally concerning Carbon and Hydrogen compounds. Same with Acetone (commonly, nail polish remover), but Acetone has its own issues.

Still, lemon and grapefruit peels don't grind themselves up and look for bits of styrofoam to rub up against. If beetles can be trained to seek out and consume the stuff, I'm all for it.
