After keeping a 3 month roo for a couple of months and having him think of me as his personal flogging equipment, I traded him off to my daughter for a nicer one. It's been several weeks now since the trade and I couldn't be happier with this new rooster!

He does a pretty good job looking after his 2 girls and about the only fault I see with him is he's always the first one in the coop at dusk. Where the other one would herd the girls into the coop, this one goes on in, gets all comfy and then calls to them. Kinda reminds me of my ex-husband.

I recently started letting them free range for a couple of hours once or twice a week. Yesterday, while I was sitting on my front porch swing, he mosies on over to the porch with his girls tagging behind. The next thing I knew, he flew up on the porch banisters and starts crowing as loud as he could. Then the girls had to try it.

Before I could get my cell phone camera ready, he had jumped on down but the girls stayed up on the banister for quite sometime before he called them to follow him. Love my new rooster and his ladies.

Hehe, making themselves at home, I see.

Give the poor guy some credit, if his hens are like a couple of ours, herding them all into the coop may be more aggravation than it's worth.

Ours will bring everyone back to the run at dusk and wait until all but two are in the coop and roosted before he joins them. The other two simply refuse to go to roost prior to that, which gave him no end of aggravation the first two weeks we had him (he'd keep jumping up/down from the roost and going out to try and get them in the coop and they'd have none of it). He finally gave up and just called them once everyone else is settled.

I love me roosters too! I have 5 now and they are all friendly. They all know their place in the pecking order and don't fight. I love their colours and behaviour is great to watch.

Many are from different places and, after a quick fight to see where they were in the pecking order, no more trouble. None got hurt in the fights, just a few lost feathers - then the looser runs off, chased by the winner. I was there to supervise. They all free range together in the day with the hens, but each has his own roost for the night.... just top roo in with the ladies.

The deposed Top Roo called rock now has taken it upon himself to take care of all the pullets and young roos. The herds them around the garden showing them what to do and how to behave. Its funny to watch.....just like he is a school teacher on a school outing with his class!
