Since buying my home on an acre about 3 years ago, I've been wanting to raise chickens, and possibly a pair of ducks, geese, and a goat! This year I decided to just do it :wee While my brother has been working tirelessly to transform an old oversized shack into their coop, as well as their outdoor yard, I've been researching and buying some chicks (and adults). To date we have 4 hens (Easter Eggers, RI Reds, and a Leghorn rooster). I also have 6 EE chicks and 5 Silkie chicks. The only other chicken type I want to add are a few marans and I think I'll be complete!

I feel like this experience did a full circle bc when I was a kid my step dad raised chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, and cockateils. I was basically responsible for feeding them and that's about it. I had absolutely ZERO interest in them. How ironic that I ended up wanting to do (almost) the same thing!

The excitement of seeing my first egg was better than Christmas morning as a kid! :celebrate

On top of my new babies, I also have a Swiss Shepherd named Koda, a Siberian Husky named Foxie, and seven cats (I can name them if you want lol). Now, I've read that Shepherds & Huskys have an instinct to kill chickens but that has not been my experience (so far). Neither have killed any animal in their life. Koda is a very good listener, Foxie... well, she does her thing within boundaries. They both know not to chase the chickens and they're both fascinated w/ the chicks. Foxie has developed a "schedule". First we go outside and check on the chickens throughout the day and when we go back inside she goes straight to the room where the chicks are and waits for me to open the door. She looks at them for a moment and then she's done and we go on about our day. It's almost as if she's taken on the role as a chicken mom lol! Don't get it twisted though! I do not leave my dogs & cats unattended w/ the birds... except one of my cats, Jaxson. He likes to watch the chickens in the yard but doesn't dare approach them (he's a scaredy cat). Everyone else needs to be supervised.

Other than that, I am a 40-something wife that works for the state of California as a government analyst. My mom lives intermittently w/ me, as well as my brother. Oan I also make luxury candles, inspired by Biblical scripture :love

... and that's about it. I've found a lot of useful information on here so I'm happy I can contribute in any way I can!
