Hi I live on long island and I'm new at this. Only 4months I love them and it's been great but I was looking for input. Our winters r really cold. How doin keep the water from freezing and can the chickens with stand the cold?

Hello & welcome to BYC. Chickens do great in the cold. Make sure they have a place with cover & not drafty. Some people use a lamp or there are heated water containers you can purchase. Check out the learning center tabs for great info. Best of luck

Thanks Brenda. I actually have a really nice coop covered and easy to maintain. However it does have a chix screen window. Is that not a good idea ?

If you have sufficient ventilation up near the ceiling, you can make a shutter for the window. Instead of a screen - it's a good idea to use 1/2" hardware cloth instead to keep predators out when the window is open.

Chickens actually do better in the cold than they do in the heat so with a well-ventilated, draft-free, dry coop they should do fine. Keep an eye on their combs and wattles, you don't want them getting frostbite. You've been given some excellent links to check out. You can also post questions about your local conditions on your state thread:

Good luck with your flock!
