I have not even built my chicken coop or ordered any chickens but could use advice on chickens that do well in the hot Florida weather we have here

Welcome from Georgia!! I think most chicken breeds are pretty adaptable to hot climates as long as they are provided with a shady area and access to good cold water!! You can find lots of information on different breeds in the breeds section of this site.

The best thing to do is go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum. You can locate and post on your state thread. That way you can ask people that breeds do best in the Florida climate, places to buy the breeds you want, feed stores, etc. etc. You may even find you have chicken people in your neighborhood. BTW Welcome to BYC

Virtually all Mediterranean breeds do well if hot weather, but most of them are very nervous and flighty (my Leghorns always cried bloody murder whenever I handled them). If you want a calm, gentle, docile breed, I would recommend Black Australorps. I raised them in the northern Sacramento Valley in California where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once) and provided them with shade, good ventilation in their coop, and plenty of fresh water and they did just fine. And they are the best layers of the standard brown egg laying breeds. Whatever you breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
