New to Bumblefoot

I thought I’d give an update on Ginger. We were never able to get the whole kernel out of her feet, and the cyst between her toes on her left foot was not getting smaller. I called my vet clinic again and was told to bring her in Friday. They sedated her and lanced the cyst and found something in it. It was hard like a piece of rock…maybe that’s what it was?? Anyway they also cleaned up the bottoms of her feet and told me to keep her in a cage while she heals, change her bandages daily, and use neosporin daily and she should be fine. They also gave me an antibiotic for her water for the next 5 days.

This morning I looked up the withdrawal period for eggs because of the baytril and am super concerned because I’m reading in some places that we should NEVER eat her eggs again. 😭 What?? I have seven hens and they all lay brown eggs. We’d never be able to eat any of them if that is the case. I have only given her one syringe of the five so far and am seriously tempted to stop treatment until I can call my vet back tomorrow, but is the damage already done?

Another thing, speaking of eggs…I went out this morning and found TWO eggs in her cage. There were none when I put her back after changing her bandages around 6:00 last night. The really weird thing is that one was paper thin and busted everywhere. Could that be from the anesthesia Friday? The other was normal, and I discarded it.

The egg laying is likely a glitch from the vet visit. However, I would give her 1 Caltrate with D3 once a day for 3 days.

Call your vet about egg withdrawal on the Baytril. Vets often prescribe it off-label.
Egg withdrawal timelines for Baytril seem to be hard to nail down, so hopefully your vet can give you more info on that. It is banned for use in poultry due to fears of future drug resistance so is deemed not FDA "approved".
It is a very good antibiotic and many use it here on BYC to treat various conditions. I've never used it, but if the vet prescribed it, then they must have felt that it was necessary.

Thank you for the quick reply! I did go check her water and she had only drank 1/3 of the liter I put the dosage in. I dumped it out and gave her fresh water and am considering waiting until I’ve talked to the vet in the morning to resume the Baytril. I will look into getting some of the caltrate for her. In the meantime I will make sure she has access to oyster shell. Thanks again!

I am sure the vet would have warned you that you couldn't eat the eggs again. Did the vet give it to you?
