Hello and thank you for this great site. I'm brand new to chickens and have a flock of 13 assorted chickens. I do have a question that I would like to have answered. Do all chickens have a small bump on their legs, or is this only on the cockerels? I realize that roosters will develop spurs, but didn't know ih hens have a bump too. The guy that I got them from said that I was getting pullets, but I think there are a few cockerels in the mix too! Any other tips for determining the sex would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure of the ages of my chickens, but I got them the end of May and they had all of their feathers. Some still had a little bit of "down" on their heads.

from New Mexico!

Yes, all chickens have that spur bump on the legs, even the girls. The best way to get sexing answers is the post in the "What breed or gender is this". Post pics when you can and somebody should have some answers for you.

Glad you could join!

Hi and :welcome

The girls have them too. :)
You should notice that rooster's combs grow faster than the girls'.
But you should post a pic on here and we can help you out a bit more. if the feed store said they're hens, they probably are - sometimes the dominant chicken in a girls-only flock will start displaying some rooster-like qualities. My big boss hen certainly acted like one, lol.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D

Thank you everyone! As soon as I figure out how to post pictures I will so I can know if my "girls" are really hens! :)
