I am new to BYC and looking for others from Louisiana. I have questions about types of birds and the heat we have here. Recently we were hit 100 plus temps and I lost three young chicks to the heat. Also I am looking to others for possible new chicks and turkeys for the spring months.

Put "Louisiana state thread" in the search box and it should take you there. Chickens tolerate cold weather much better than hot. They need shade, shade and more shade.
Natural or manufactured (tarps, awnings, etc.), loads of ice cold water and shallow pans of water for them to cool their feet in. Cool feet , cool bird. In very hot regions, the coops often have a couple sides that are just wire for air flow.

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

Sorry to hear you lost some of your chicks, heat and humidity can do a number on birds.

Thanks for joining us!
