New to BYC and to owning chickens!

A class I am in at my school was incubating chicken eggs and cared for them for one week after they hatched I think? And then they where giving them away so of course I wanted one. My parents ended up letting me get two of them though! ^w^
I got them on March 31st, and they grow so fast! This morning now one of them is flying out of the container I have them in.

I don't know what the age range is or type of people here are, so I hope I can fit in.

As a fellow chicken-loving teen, I can assure that you won't only fit in on BYC, you'll be welcomed with open arms! :D There's no better place for chicken raisers, young and old alike, than BYC!

Hello and welcome to BYC

Your chicks should be just over 3 weeks old.
from March 31 to April 15 is a total of 15 days. Now add on the week you were caring for them after they hatched in school is 7 days.
15+7=22 days old at least. So this makes them just over 3 weeks old.
If you can take some pictures of the chicks and share them with us. We would all love to see them. What grade are you in? I remember when we did this when I was in school in 5th grade.

I am in high school right now, if you wanted to know.

The time I have had my chicks may not be accurate, I can't remember the exact time frame but I tried my best, eheh. Here is a picture I took of them! The breed is unknown too, does anyone think they may know what kind they are? I also do not know the genders yet.
The larger one is named Reed, and the smaller one is Jix. They look sleepy right now so I kept them in their little house.

This is from the day I first got them, in the box I borrowed from my teacher.

And this one is from this morning when Reed surprised me by flying out. They seemed a bit confused and just watched me from their perching. We now have a top part to keep them from escaping and possibly getting hurt.


My dad has said he will build a nice place for them in our yard, so I am looking forward to that!
 
They are so cute awww. Its time to get out there and start helping dad with building them a coop. Have your dad look at some of the plans here others have built in order for him to make sure the coop will be big enough for them and a few others down the road. There is so much to learn and so little time to learn it all when you have chicks. It seems like they grow so fast in only a few days. With in 5 to 6 months you will get eggs if you have hens. Getting your first egg is so exciting. Chat again soon.
 
You are very welcome here. Please put a wire top of the box the chicks are in. That way they stay safely inside and get good air flow for ventilation. When they are 6-8 weeks old you can post photos at "what breed or gender is this," and find out. Thank you for joining us at Backyard Chickens. PS you have a very nice dad.
 
Welcome to BYC! My most recent batch of babies also came home on that date and they do grow and change so very quickly! It is definitely time to increase their brooder size, put on a good cover and get busy on building that coop -- best of luck in your new venture!
