Hello, new to the forums- only kind of new to BYC. Throughout the years I've gleaned tons of information from the forums when my google searches lead me here, but never joined or contributed. Today I had a question that a google search couldn't answer, so here I am.
I've had chickens on and off since I was in high school 20 years ago, but hadn't had any in several years when I bought chicks last year. I decided I wanted to breed some unique breeds and make a little side income off of my property... things got a little out of hand and now I have about 60 hens, so we'll see where it goes.
I mainly have Swedish Black Hens / Svart Hona, and then a handful of Silverudd's Blue / Isbar in splash and blue coloration. My main interest is in breeding and selling Blue fibromelanistic chicken that lays green shelled eggs... just because I think it's the only thing cooler than black fibro chickens. I will be adding several Olandsk Dwarf to the flock because they are adorable and I seem to have a thing for the Swedish breeds, and then calling it good. I have a few chickens of other breeds that will be finding new homes this spring because I want to keep things relatively simple and not have a zillion pens.
My favorite thing about keeping chickens is honestly just collecting beautiful clean eggs. There's just something magical about collecting a basket of fresh clean eggs produced by beautiful birds.
Other hobbies - Adventuring in the outdoors with my wife and son when we have the time.
My main occupation is building houses as a contractor. I would love it if I could make my living off of my own property bringing unique birds into other people's lives, but I've participated enough farming and ranching to know that the idea is often shinier than the reality. In any case I've got a breeding flock and we'll see where things go this spring.
