Hi I just joined BYC.

Originally from London, moved to Frisco TX, then out to the country in TX a year ago.

I started with five, two day old chicks, lost one for an unknown reason at about six months of age. My original four are almost a year
Two Ameraucana, one RIR, one buff oprington

I got seven more a couple of months back, they were two-three months old, did not want to mess with chicks this time.
One welsummur, one barnvelder, three marans, two plymouth rocks

All are laying well.

I love owning chickens they are very relaxing to be around, the first four can be hand fed, petted and picked up. Sometimes I just sit on the ground and let them run around me. When they see me they know they are going to get some scratch and they all come running.

I just started to free range them when I am at my house. That way I can keep any eye on them every once in a while.
I got six guineas a few months back and they all hang out together, the guineas free range all the time.

After free ranging I realised I had to donkey proof the coop to stop the two donkeys from getting in and knocking the feeder down and eating all their food.

I like having fresh eggs, I sell a few here and there, but they are really just pets.

I alos have fiev goats, three dogs, two cats.

Thanks.

Sounds like you have a really nice flock!

How nice, interesting intro- I've heard donkeys do that and sometimes goats and Emus. Personally I don't find chicken feed very tempting. Rather have a steak & baked potato.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas not too far from Frisco (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me). If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Glad you joined the flock! BYC has a sister for other types of livestock, if you're interested, check out BackYardHerds.com

My donkeys are not so much an alarm system as protection for my animals from stray dogs and Coyotes.

I have heard from my daughter that they chased our neighbors two dogs off the property.
I have seen them in action against a friendly stray dog. They tried to stomp it to death. It hid under my truck and every time it tried to get out one of the donkeys tried to stomp it. It was hard to watch as I care about all animals. I trapped the dog in my garage and took it to the pound. It was micro chipped so I hope it founds its home.

I hate seeing them try to hurt animals but I got them as livestock guardians and so far so good. No losses.

We have some friends in Texas who keep donkeys for just that very reason.
