Hi everybody, thank you for all your welcomes and info.
I just wanted to let you know we had one chick hatch, we lost two. we're not sure why, they died before pipping a hole, any info would be great. I started a thread yesterday called "egg pipping" I also uploaded some pics of our new baby in that thread today.

Welcome from Ohio!!! Im sorry about the Lost babies, but nature takes its course for the best. Looking forward to starting my own flock soon as the wife gave me permission!

Your new friend Michael!

Btw my lab says hi too.

Sorry to hear about your losses, but congratulations on your chick. One thing that needs clarification, well maybe a couple. DON'T BUY/USE TEFLON COATED BULBS ( ADVERTISED AS SHATTER PROOF), THEY HAVE A COATING ON THEM THAT IS TOXIC TO POULTRY). Also when people say to have them at 90F, they mean have one end of the brooder at that temperature. Always allow the chicks to move closer or further away from the source of heat to the temperature they need. What wattage bulb you need is dependent on where you are brooding them. In the winter I brood in the house ( very dusty) so I usually start out with a 100w bulb. You check the temperature by putting a thermostat on the floor of the brooder under the light. If you are brooding outside start out with giving them just enough room to be able to get away from the light, you don't want them to get stranded out in the cold. After a few days they will be mobile/smart enough to know where the heat is. Always give them lukewarm water, cold water contributes to poppy-butt. Good luck and enjoy
