New to chickens and in Alaska starting today!

boy these chickens sure are getting frustrating, they keep getting shavings in the food troft and then when i clean the shavings out they go in there and eat like they didnt know the food was even there like mad chickens, are they that dumb they dont know it was there after they kick some shavings up? they are growing rapidly out of this tub, i think i will need to get a larg box or crate for them as its a mad house in there now. i wish the 8 weeks would come already so i can get them outa the basement.

Seriously thinking about putting them in our enclosed carport, its not heated but they will have their heat lamp.

i cant wait for the chicken nipples to get here, as it seems that one rabbit feeder isnt enough and my big waterer i put in they get them dang shavings of pine in it! maybe i need to just get rid the pine and do some 1/4 inch wire and a raised floor with newspaper under it.?!?

Good to know they're doing ok. I had one croak on me Sunday, no appearant reason other then nature.
Place a 2x4 on it's side and put the feeder on it. This gets it up a bit so when they scratch it doesn't go right into the food. You saw my setup, the wire works great but takes the chicks a day to get used to it. Never knew how much poo they put out till you clean it every day off the tray.

Also, you don't have 15 chickens, you have 6. Remember the city ordinance, you also don't have any roos.

I elevate the feeder as Chickensinwasilla recommended, and also use pine pellets (intended for cat litter boxes), rather than shavings. They've never kicked those into the feeder, and they're substantially heavier than shavings. Might help keep things a bit tidier!

so this sunday i think the little ones will be 3 weeks old , and the bigger 3 will be 6 weeks old i think. all still alive, got one thats either getting plucked or losing feathers or sick not sure, i call him gary coleman cause its a little black one. hope he makes it, could be a she im not sure.

thanks! i was getting worried i was about to lose one or two already on only day 2! man i hope we get some eggs this year from them, my luck they will be all boys! been having terrible luck breeding rabbits as far as getting them pregnent.

how much are you feeding your rabbits ? if they get too fat they won't breed. all it takes is 1/2 cup feed per day per adult rabbit any more and they get to fat ...plus make sure you put your doe in with your buck and not the other way around, as they wont breed if you put the buck in with the doe.

that must be it! as i have full food containers in their cage everyday. they are coffee cans i modified. and they are lookin fat! i guess i will cut them back to 1/2 cup feed a day, do the california giants get more then 1/2 cup?

ya i always put the doe in with buck. i leave them togeather one afternoon, then take them out.
