New to chickens and loving it!

Welcome! Chicks are so fun!! Getting babies was a much better idea in our experience than getting grown ones. We got 10 chicks the first time around but the kids wanted to get some more green/blue layers so we purchased some "hand-raised" pullets from a local place. The birds were in a very healthy environment but once we got them home they didn't act hand-raised at ALL! We got 6 and a year later only 3 will let us touch them at all--and that's been with a lot of hard work to get them there--and they still really resist it. There are three that still won't let me near them. Highly, highly recommend always raising your own chicks. It's work, no doubt. But it's far better in the end! Our first ten come when called, will sleep on our laps, fly up to our arms/shoulders for cuddles, etc. One (shown in profile pic) even adopted 12, day-old, mallard ducklings who were orphaned. Chicks vs. pullets...Night and day...good luck!! And handle them LOTS, LOTS, LOTS!!!!

Welcome to BYC!

Here is my best advice for navigating this forum:

If you have not already, put your location in your profile, not your address or anything but at least your state that will help you get better advice, and speaking of advice....

Almost everyone here is an absolute expert on almost everything imaginable, take me for example I have left advice about freezing temps and I live in Southern California. So take the best and leave the rest.

Once you do get some good advice, and you will, then follow said advice... Example being the guy who burned down his coop after being advised not to use a heat lamp in the coop and then talks about how to place the heat lamp going forward in the new coop....

Stay away from religion and politics, its just not worth it:oops:

Oh, and build BIG, chicken math is real:plbb

Welcome to the flock!
