New to chickens but quickly becoming obsessed

@Shadrach @C Siena Siena is exactly right!! I'll know better thanks to you... Or if I don't, I'll at least know it's all my own fault :p But seriously, that was an amazing article. I couldn't believe what you wrote about Random. Or rather—I can believe it, and it says so much outside of the common narrative about roosters existing only to mate, fight, and (at best) act as sentries. I'm so glad I read it early on so I could mess up a little less in my behavior towards them!

I so agree. In evaluation the males, wow, so glad I read the article. No, I don't want an aggressive male...but know they are male and have tendencies. I want to do the best for our chickens and understand behavior. Welcome to the learning club.

Let me add, no fault, but learning. Yes sometimes with consequences but learning for future knowledge/improvement.
