My hubby and I built the whichita coop that is on here, with a couple changes, but basically the same layout. I was wondering if keeping 8-10 chickens in there would be to much if they are mostly free range? I can possibly add on and give more roosting space but wanted to get some input.

I am new to chickens also but I think it is plenty of room if you let them free range also. We have built 2 coops, and decided we want more room lol. I am wanting to raise certain breeds for selling and then "my flock of mutts". Trial and error is how we are working through everything. Not enough room, you can always add more.

The coop only measures 5 by 10 the inside roosting area is only 3 x5. but like I said they will be mostly free range except for at night and we would add extra roosting space for colder months when they wont be able to free range as much.

I wouldn't keep more than 6 in a coop that size, just because they get grumpy with each other, can have feather picking problems, and it has to be cleaned more often. That being said, as long as they have 10 sq ft of range space each and never have to be confined (except at night), they often do okay.

Thank you all for your input. I had to order 15 chicks and narrowed it down to 8 so far, its so hard to choose when i ordered one of each kind I like :(
