Hi there! I stumbled upon backyard chickens while trying to plan out my first time coop, and this site is an awesome wealth of information!

We will be first time chicken owners. I've always wanted chickens, but with my husband's job we moved too much to have a real flock! Now that we've been in Idaho and are settled (and my youngest is 3, and we own our house, etc), I'm so excited to start chickens this year! I want to do it right from the start, so I've been browsing the site looking for solid coop ideas. We have almost an acre of land, so we are pretty fortunate in terms of space, but I'm thinking of converting a playhouse or something similar into our coop (we are not particularly handy, but we are determined). If any other PNW/Boise chicken owners have any suggestions, please let me know! I think we will probably have 4 chickens or so to start (I know Boise limits chickens to 6). We would have loved to have gone pre-fab, but from all the comments I've read on the site, it looks like that's not a great option.

Welcome! Glad you decided to join us :welcome Have you considered converting a shed? I have 10 thumbs and converted an old existing wooden shed into a large coop and put some windows and roosts, nesting boxes and a pop door in, then attached a walk in dog kennel with a roof, covered the chain link with hardware cloth. After almost 10 years the ancient shed started to fall apart, roof leaked but it served its purpose well and I managed to do all the work myself. I considered buying a new shed and converting it but then found a local fellow that builds coops/runs and I ‘splurged’. This was during summer, still had to work on the pavers surrounding the coop and run
