New to chickens? how many are you starting with?

We started with 7. Now I am convincing my hubby that we need a few silkies because that would be cheaper then an incubator.

In a few months I don't know how many I will have...plus more ducks!

Well...my intention was to start with the 10 layers my kids got me as an advance Mother's day present, but i have always liked bantams, so i decided i wanted some of them too. I ordered 10 bantams but before they got here i knew i was in trouble, my daughter is pregnant and bored so when she insisted i go with her to the local TSC chicken swap, i thought uhoh...i was right i came back with 3 bantams! Then my chicks arived and with the "peanuts" i had 15 chicks. Ok, now lets count...10 layers, 3 bantams then 15 more chicks...28! Plus daughter has ducks coming, & has runner duck eggs and guinea eggs in the incubator, still not enough, she dragged her husband and brother to another swap yesterday and came home with a 6 month old guinea hen! And was on the computer and phone looking to see if she could find more guinea keets locally today!

My ladies 2-silver laced Wyandottes and 2 white rocks are doing fabulous! My week-old contraband chicks have already won the neighbors over and their feathers are starting to look pretty cool! I'm introducing a roosting bar to their brooder. Any other suggestions for the Fab 4? Good luck to everyone and your new chicks!

One of my comets finally flew out of the brooder box today! They are only 1.5 weeks old! Had to binder clamp some screen over it. The sides are at least 2ft tall! I assume this is normal?
