Hello!
We are a homeschool family living in the cold climate of Alaska. My 12 year old and I are trying out being chicken moms for the first time. Currently we have 12- week old chicks taking up space in our den. šŸ˜Š

After researching about different breeds, we settled on 4 each of Buff Orpington, Sapphire Gem and Easter Eggers.

Our chicken coop is a small barn that we have revamped to provide a safe, fun environment for our birds. The actual inside coop area is approximately 8x3 and about 8 feet in height. Then there is another indoor area that is approximately 7x10 feet with a height of 12 feet. This last area is not weather tight. Weā€™re a little anxious about how to protect and keep warm 12 birds during our long, frigid winters. Some of shared that they use heat lamps and others that they do not heat at all.

Having a growing teen with a love for all animals, 3 dogs and a cat already, is the main reason we decided to try our hand at chicken raising. The way our world is going today, being more self sufficient is important to us. Thus we are also building a small high tunnel and learning about growing food for our family.
