New to chickens/ would like advice on selecting breeds

I've never had buff opringtons, but I've heard that they're great with kids. Australorps are also very gentle chickens. Why don't you get a mix and see what you like?
That's kinda how I'm leaning, I just wanted to put out some feelers and see what experienced chicken owners suggested. Thanks for the info, I was looking into the Australorps, so its good to know that they are docile and friendly.

Welcome to chicken keeping. Do you know about chicken math yet? If not, you will lol. As far as good all around chickens, Black Australorps are great, good layers, occasionally broody in case you want a hatch, hens are fairly calm at handling and they are long term layers. Buff Orpingtons are about the same, though they do slow down in winter alot. If you have kiddies around, get at least one Easter Egger, they are not very petable mostly, but kids love the colored eggs.
I was definitely going to get a few EE's for the kids to collect eggs from! Thanks for the input!

:welcome Welcome! Sounds like you're already getting some GREAT pointers on here! The Silkies are FANTASTIC but will go broody. I love the Mottled Cochin :bowHail to the Cochin owners! Speckled Sussex are extremely friendly and also good layers.
Whatever breed you choose they will bring you joy!
Keep us posted! :pop:frow
ill have to check into the Mottled Cochins and I did read about the Sussex being a docile and friendly bird. I really think the Silkies would be great birds for the kids. I want to start small, but after everyone's wonderful comments, I want 2 of everything!! Thank you so much!

Hello Everyone,
I live on a small farm and would like to free range some hens to collect eggs. I would also like to get a rooster as well in order to obtain some fertilize eggs to hatch. I'm unsure of what breeds to get. I like the Silkies, Brahmas, Wyandottes, really I'm all over the map when it comes to chickens. :) which why I'm reaching out for some advice. I also want to acquire a couple of guinea fowl as well. Can someone offer me advice on how to get started? Any help would be great.
Thanks

THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL THE USEFUL INFORMATION! I DEFINITELY KNOW WHO TO ASK ABOUT CHICKENS!! I NEVER KNEW THERE WAS SO MANY BREEDS OF CHICKENS! I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY COOP FINISHED AND GET MY GIRLS LAYING!!! THANKS AGAIN
