I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

I note you mention you are in Central Missouri but if you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

I was going to suggest EEs!
People say they're skittish but mine is the sweetest & friendliest of my flock, and the best forager. She likes to hang out on my lap or arm, & sometimes preens my hair. Sooo sweet!
And she lays a large blue egg almost every day.

Are you going to raise them as chicks or get pullets?

There's also a ton of advice here on coops as you prepare for your new flock. Especially making sure you have adequate protection, space & ventilation. Basically lots of hardware cloth, even more space (chicken math), and good ventilation.

And also an emergency kit - things like electrolytes, Nutridrench, bluekote, vetwrap.

You're getting tons of breed advice so I'll focus more on protection. I like the feather netting from premier 1. It's a portable electric fence to keep bad guys out. I also put small shelters around the area where they range so they can hide if necessary.

I hope I might suggest some of the traditional breed: Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, or even Barred Rocks. Any one of these 3 can be for eggs, meat, and can become broody on occasion and hatch eggs for you. So good luck on your choice and we are here to help with any further questions!
